5. Testing Techniques

                                                    5. Testing Techniques

Objectives :

  • To know terminology of surface finish and measure the surface finish of various components.

5.1 Measurement of Surface Finish :

Important points discussed in this topic :

1. We revised about the surface finish of various surfaces using examples from our surroundings.  We learnt about the physical properties of surface.

2. We had a brief discussion about the various Qualitative methods to check surface finish, such as Touch inspection, Visual inspection, Microscopic, and Photographic Inspection methods.

3. How the surface looks like under microscope, and how we can find Primary and Secondary textures as well as the Roughness and Waviness of a surface.

4. Mathematical methods for measuring surface Roughness such as RMS Value, Rz Value, Ra Value, etc. were discussed.

5. Brief Construction and Working of Roughness measuring devices such as Tomilson's Surface Tester, Taylor Hobson Talysurf guage, and Profilometer were discussed.

5.2 Machine Tool Testing :

Important points discussed in this topics :

6. Why do we carry out Machine tool testing, and Alignment testings. What will be the consequences if the tool or machine is misaligned ?

7. Geometrical tests such as Parallelism between two planes, Parallelism between axis and plane, Parallelism between two axes, etc. were discussed.

8. Work features such as Straightness testing, Squareness testing, Coaxiality, Roundness, and Runout checking.

9. We learnt about the various tests to be carried out on Lathe machine, Milling machine, and Drilling machine to check the Alignment.

10. We also conduced practical of checking Alignment of various components of Lathe machine and Drilling machine in our Workshop.
